Maybe the search for indubitable foundations (innate ideas, sense data) is itself flawed. When asked why languages are structured in certain ways, some theorists claim that the brain and our neural networks form the "deep grammar" of what things mean. If Kant is right, then why do cultures seem to differ on the categories of understanding? One possible is that even though the categories seem to vary, such differences are due only to differences in the "surface grammar" of language, the ways in which things are understood as meaningful. In short, if we are limited to phenomena (things as they appear), either we will never know if our ideas are true or we have to redefine what truth is. ![]() Kant's solution means that we will never know if our ideas about the world are true or it means that we have to redefine reality as that which we experience rather than that which experience represents. We can never know anything about things we do not experience and organize in terms of the mind's structure-for example, God, soul, and other metaphysical topics and that seems a shame. Reason provides the structure or form of what we know, the senses provide the content. Knowledge is possible because it is about how things appear to us, not about how things are in themselves. We can be said to know things about the world, then, not because we somehow step outside of our minds to compare what we experience with some reality outside of it, but rather because the world we know is always already organized according to a certain fixed (innate) pattern that is the mind. There can be no knowledge without sensation, but sense data cannot alone provide knowledge either. That is, whenever we think about anything, we have to think about it in certain ways (for example, as having causes, as existing or not existing, as being one thing or many things, as being real or imaginary, as being something that has to exist or doesn't have to exist), not because that is the way the world is, but rather because that is the way that our minds order experience. All rational beings think the world in terms of space, time, and categories such as cause and effect, substance, unity, plurality, necessity, possibility, and reality. Instead, we know about the world insofar as we experience it according to the unchanging and universally shared structure of mind. ![]() If there are such judgments, then how are they possible? Kant's answer: the rationalists are right in saying that we can know about things in the world with certainty and the empiricists are right in saying that such knowledge cannot be limited merely to truths by definition nor can it be provided by experience. Such propositions are universal and necessary (and thus a priori ) even though they could not have been known from experience and they would be synthetic a priori judgments. But this does not mean that all synthetic judgments are a posteriori judgments, since in mathematical and geometrical judgments, the predicate is not contained in the subject (e.g., the concept 12 is not contained either in 7, 5, +, =, or even in their combination nor does the concept "shortest distance between two points" contain the idea of a straight line). ![]() What Kant proposes is this: Surely all a posteriori judgments are synthetic judgments, since any judgment based solely on experience cannot be derived merely by understanding the meaning of the subject. The debate between empiricists and rationalists prompts Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) to highlight differences between the kinds of statements, judgments, or propositions that guide the discussion.įor Kant, the distinctions between analytic and synthetic and a priori and a posteriori judgments must be kept separate, because it is possible for some judgments to be synthetic and a priori at the same time. Most of the wallets used to offer the possibility to make a backup of the funds through the seed. Seed: a phrase to restore everything, anytime, anywhere If, for example, Electrum or Coinomi were to disappear one day, how would it be possible to recover funds without a well-defined standard?įor this reason in recent years have been defined some well-specified standards of seed to safely store their private keys. However, there are different types of seeds belonging to real standards, so as to allow the user to recover their funds on different wallets. The seed is extremely important, which is why it must be stored with great care, perhaps on several paper copies offline, as it is essential to recover the funds kept in the wallet. It consists of a sentence consisting of a number of words. In my next post, I’m going to show you how to make a paper wallet for cold storage. Each wallet of any cryptocurrency has its own seed. The more you play with sending and receiving money from Electrum, the more familiar you’ll get. Just use any of your Electrum addresses as the “to” address and you’re all set. ![]() ![]() Coinbase and LocalBitcoins both have online wallets where it’s easy to send money from. Just right-click and choose “Copy to clipboard” to make it easier. These are yours, so you can start sending money to any of these. The default “History” view isn’t particularly helpful, so click over to the “Receive” tab. Ok! So above you can see your empty Electrum wallet. (But don’t forget to add a password if/when you start accumulating some serious money.)Īll this flew over my head, so I just left the default “Auto connect” checked. You can leave it blank if you just want to get started. This is to prevent someone with access to your computer from taking your wallet file and stealing your keys. You’ll then be asked to create a password for your wallet. The math that’s doing this behind the scenes is nuts. This is your “seed” and you can use it to recover your wallet if it becomes lost or damaged. When you launch it, you’ll want to “Create a new wallet.” Then it’ll present you with a bunch of random words. You should also be familiar with creating an offline wallet or paper wallet, which is known as "cold storage." (I’ll get to that in my next post.) Setting up the Electrum wallet software So as a best practice you should create encrypted backups of your wallet and store them somewhere off your computer (this is easily Googleable so I'll leave that in your capable hands). Now of course, you could still be shit out of luck if a) your computer crashes, or b) your computer is hacked. So the overall concept is that you keep your wallet on your computer so that your private keys are safe on your hard drive and not "in the cloooooud" somewhere. It's not particularly intuitive or amazing, but enough people in the forums were using it, so I thought what the hell. And you can see now that this main part of the email is shrinking down to that smaller screen size. Anything we wanna override and the head of our email we have to do so using important to make that the most important CSS property to be applied. ![]() But you have to add the important rule here, because we're using those inline styles so we have that with actual view. So we'll say dot mobile to target that table, and then we'll update it so that the width is equal to 100%. So right now we just wanna update that mobile table to be 100% wide instead of 600 pixels to make it fluid for those smaller screens, anything that's below 600 pixels. And then we can start adding all of our mobile styles in here. So we're gonna say max-width equals 600 pixels, and then we can open up our braces there. And then we're gonna give it some sort of test for whether or not these styles are being applied. We're gonna say Since we're on a screen, we're gonna target only screens. So I'm gonna use a media query, which hopefully everybody's familiar with the syntax for a media query. You can see I have this place holder for responsive styles. And then we'll go up in our email and clear that out so we can see it from scratch. So the only way we can do that is by targeting it with a class. So we want to change that to be a 100% wide but only on mobile screens, smaller screens. The main one here is going to be that 600 pixel wide container table that we set up. So the next step is making these fixed with tables, fluid so that they shrink down and fit to that screen. So we have the fluid images that because we're doing that response by default approach to our images. We have fluid layouts, fluid images, and then media queries. So if we go in here again, we have these three tenets of responsive design. We know that this can be displayed on smaller mobile screens and we wanna make sure that stacks and it shuffles down to that single column layout that people can easily scroll through. > Rodriguez: This email right now we have three separate columns in here, if we were to shrink this down a little bit, then those columns aren't going anywhere. So, we're gonna go back over to our code here. > Rodriguez: Let's look at how we would make our multiple column layout actually responsive and stack those columns on mobile.
